Sir Ben Ainslie Wins at Home

Sir Ben Ainslie led Land Rover BAR to victory at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth yesterday in front of an adoring home crowd. The story of the weekend was a battle, worthy of the America’s Cup, between Ainslie and his former team mate Jimmy Spithill, skipper and helmsmen of ORACLE TEAM USA. Saturday saw the Portsmouth based team take two victories and a fifth place in light winds setting them up perfectly for Super Sunday, three points ahead of the Defenders. With points counting for double on Sunday, ORACLE TEAM USA knew they had a good chance of closing the deficit and hopefully taking their first overall victory of the series so far, but Land Rover BAR made sure they did everything they could to prevent such a conclusion.

SUPER SUNDAY - Sunday 24th July

The wind picked up on Sunday to allow for the six America's Cup teams to foil across the Solent in three exciting races. Land Rover BAR, leading the standings going into racing this morning, won the opening race at a canter. ORACLE TEAM USA, second in the first race, stormed to victory in the second race leaving the two teams within touching distance at the top of the standings ahead of the last race.

The last race forced the previously excited crowd to silence as they anxiously willed Land Rover BAR to overall victory. ORACLE TEAM USA again crossed the finish line first but with Land Rover BAR coming in second they managed to win overall by just one point.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were on hand to award the winners on the race village stage after the racing had concluded.

Led by the most decorated olympic sailor in history, Sir Ben Ainslie, Land Rover BAR struggled in the first race posting a fifth place finish but as the afternoon progressed the British team gained momentum.
